So You Want to Drive a Speeder

A concise guide for when you decided to join the motorcar hobby.

Insurance

Missed our introduction? Start at the beginning.

Train riding over bridgeBefore you can operate a motorcar at an excursion, you must have NARCOA insurance.  Because of the changes in insurance coverage in the last couple of years, you may not be able to get coverage until 2004, but that probably doesn't matter.  There's little possibility that you can get everything else together before then, anyway.  The policy normally provides liability coverage for any sanctioned motorcar excursion.  In addition, physical damage coverage is available for your motorcar.  Details on the 2003 coverage plan can be found at http://www.narcoa.org/docs.htm#ins.

Excursions

Once you have all of this together, you'll be ready to run on your first excursion.  Try to choose one close to home, and make it a shorter excursion on fairly level trackage.  Don't try BC Rail or the Great Smokey Mountain the first time out;  you'll be out of your league and the excursion coordinator won't be happy with you.  There are plenty of short, flat runs around the country where you can get your feet wet and gain experience.

Good luck!
